Survey the site before you sign

A site visit before the contract is the step that separates a smooth lift from an expensive surprise. It confirms the crane can physically reach the site, establishes where it will stand, and verifies the ground will carry the machine and the load together. Access gates, turning radius, overhead lines and the position of the nearest hard standing all change which machine is the right answer — and all of them are cheaper to discover a week early than on delivery morning.

What a load chart actually tells you

The tonnage in a crane's name is its maximum capacity at minimum radius — the best case, not the working case. The load chart is the real specification: it lists what the machine can lift at each combination of boom length and radius, and the figures fall away sharply as the load moves out. A 100-tonne crane working at 30 metres is not a 100-tonne crane. Before committing, check the chart at the radius and the height your job actually needs, with the rigging weight included in the load.

Planning the lift

  1. Weigh the load properly — including slings, spreader beam and shackles, which are routinely forgotten.
  2. Fix the radius — the horizontal distance from the crane's centre of rotation to the set-down point, not to the edge of the building.
  3. Add the height — building height plus load height plus sling length plus clearance.
  4. Check the ground — level, compacted, and matted under the outriggers where the bearing pressure concentrates.
  5. Confirm the approach — that the machine, and the transport carrying it, can reach the standing position at all.

When a boom truck is the better answer

Not every lift needs a crane. Inside a city, where access is tight and the load is moderate, a boom truck often finishes the job faster: it drives in, lifts, sets the load on its own bed and leaves, with none of the set-up and rigging time a mobile crane needs. Reserve the crane for the loads and the heights a boom truck genuinely cannot reach — the equipment budget goes further that way.
