Equipment Transport: Choosing the Right Method

When to choose each method

• Lowbed: tall/heavy equipment (cranes, excavators) with low center of gravity.
• Flatbed: general cargo and long materials with fast side/top loading.
• Dyna: light/medium loads and city deliveries between nearby sites.
• Boom truck: load/unload at moderate heights where a crane isn’t available.

Selection factors

1. Weight & dimensions: verify tonnage and L×W×H precisely.
2. Route & permits: oversize/overweight loads may need permits and escorts; survey bridges and turns.
3. Tie-downs: certified chains/straps, adequate anchor points, wheel chocks, edge protection.

Choosing between them, quickly

• Lowbed — tall or heavy plant where travelling height is the constraint.

• Boom truck — when the load has to be lifted as well as carried, and a separate crane would be overkill.

Permits and route surveys

Dimensions, not weight, are what usually trigger paperwork. A load over the permitted width, height or length needs authorisation, and often a surveyed route and escort vehicles. That authorisation takes time to obtain, so it should be started when the move is planned rather than when the truck is booked. Bridge and underpass clearances, turning radii at both ends, gradients and time-of-day restrictions in built-up areas are all part of the same check.

What sets the price

Transport is quoted per job rather than from a price list, because the variables move independently:

• Vehicle class — which of the four above the job actually needs.
• Distance and route difficulty.
• Permits and escorts, where dimensions require them.
• Loading and unloading — ramps, a crane at either end, or self-driven.
• Waiting time on site, which is why a firm slot at both ends is worth agreeing.

2. Pick-up and delivery addresses, with a note on access at each.
3. Who loads and who secures at each end.

Which vehicle do I need?

Send the weight and the three travelling dimensions and we will tell you. Height decides lowbed versus flatbed; access at the delivery point decides whether a medium truck is the better call.

Do you arrange permits?

Yes, for loads that need them. Tell us the dimensions early — authorisation, not vehicle availability, is normally what sets the earliest possible date.

Can you both lift and transport?

A boom truck does exactly that in one vehicle, which is often the fastest option inside a city. For heavier loads we combine a crane at the lifting end with a flatbed or lowbed for the move.
