Electric or rough-terrain diesel?

This choice is made by the ground and the enclosure, not by preference. An electric scissor lift is built for finished interiors: no exhaust, low noise, non-marking tyres, and a compact footprint that fits through doors and down aisles. A rough-terrain diesel machine has four-wheel drive, larger tyres and often outriggers, and is built for unmade ground outdoors. Taking an electric machine outside onto soft or sloping ground is the most common mis-hire we see — it will not travel, and the shift is lost.

It goes up, not out

A scissor lift raises a wide, stable platform vertically. There is no outreach: if the work is above an obstacle, behind a parapet, or offset from where the machine can stand, a scissor lift cannot get to it and you need a boom lift. Deciding this before delivery rather than after is worth doing, because the two machines look interchangeable on a quote and are not interchangeable on site.

Measure the openings, not just the height

1. Working height needed, from the ground to the task — then add the platform height figure, not the machine height.
2. Door and aisle widths on the route from the unloading point to the work area.
3. Floor loading capacity, particularly on upper floors, suspended slabs and over basements.
4. Platform size and capacity for the crew, tools and materials that will be on it.
5. Whether an extension deck is needed to reach past a fixed obstruction.

What the rental costs depend on

Platform height sets the class of machine; after that the cost is shaped by indoor electric versus rough-terrain diesel, the rental period, and transport to and from site. Interior fit-out work usually runs for weeks rather than days, and a monthly term is normally the cheaper way to cover it.

Can I use a scissor lift outdoors?

Only a rough-terrain model. Standard electric machines are built for firm, level floors and will not operate safely on soft or sloping ground.

What height do I need?

Work out the height of the task itself, then compare against platform height rather than machine height — the two are quoted differently and confusing them is the usual cause of a machine arriving too short.

Will it fit through a standard doorway?
