How to select a tower light

LED vs Metal Halide

LED provides high output with lower fuel consumption and instant full brightness. It also has longer life and lower heat. While rental cost may be higher, total operating cost is often lower for medium/long projects.

Coverage planning

An 8–9 m mast with four LED floodlights typically covers ~2000–3000 m² depending on aiming and obstacles. Use 10–20% overlap for uniform lighting and cross-aim towers to reduce shadows.

Runtime, fuel & noise

• Tank size determines continuous hours; some models exceed 60–70 hours per fill.
• Fuel use is lower with LED fixtures.
• Noise (dB) must comply with local limits—select silent models as needed.

• Stabilize outriggers on level ground and stake down in windy areas.

Placement matters as much as quantity

Lighting from a single direction throws hard shadows behind every object on site, and those shadows cause most night-work incidents. Spread the towers around the perimeter of the working area rather than clustering them at the access point, and aim to light each work position from two directions where you can. It is common to need one fewer tower than expected once they are positioned properly — and one more than expected when they are all parked together by the gate.

Checklist before you book

1. Measure the area to be lit and mark the specific work positions within it.
2. Confirm the ground is firm and level enough to set the outriggers and raise the mast safely.
3. Check for overhead lines or structures along the mast's raised path.
4. Work out shift length against tank capacity, so a unit does not run dry mid-shift.
5. Agree who refuels, and how often, before the units arrive.

Frequently asked questions

How many towers do I need?

One tower typically covers around 3,000 m² at usable working light. Larger areas need more than one, positioned around the perimeter rather than together, so the work is lit from more than one direction.

How long will a tower run before refuelling?

It depends on tank capacity and lamp type. LED units draw far less fuel than metal halide and will normally cover a full night shift comfortably. Tell us your shift length and we will match the tank to it.

Do lighting towers need a separate generator?

No. Each unit is self-contained with its own engine, which is exactly why they suit sites with no mains connection.
