About the 17 m telehandler

The real difference between the 17 m and the 14 m is not height alone but forward reach: about 12.5–13.5 m against roughly 10 m. That lets the machine stand outside an excavation, a wall or a scaffold zone and put the load beyond it. Maximum capacity is about 4 t with the boom retracted, the machine weighs around 11–13 t, and most models have front stabilizers that go down before high or long lifts.

When planning, draw a line from where the machine will stand to the drop point. If it crosses an excavation, wall or scaffold, measure its length and the obstacle's height, because those two numbers decide whether this size is enough. The machine must stand on firm, level ground before the stabilizers go down, and fresh backfill beside basement walls is one of the riskiest spots on a site.

What a 17 m telehandler is hired for

  • Materials to four- and five-story buildings

Lands pallets on the top slab edge even when the machine stands several meters off the building.

  • Placing over excavations and boundary walls

Close to 13 m of reach lets it stand outside a basement dig or a neighbor's wall and land the load inside.

  • Roof sheets on taller steel buildings

Lifts sheet bundles and purlins onto hangar roofs whose eaves are beyond the smaller machine.

  • Suspended loads with a jib attachment

With an approved jib and its own load chart it places small AC units and light steel pieces without calling in a crane.

Is the 17 m telehandler the right size?

  • Smaller size14 m telehandler — If loads go to the first or second floor and the machine can get close to the building, the 14 m telehandler is enough, and it is lighter and shorter.

17 m telehandler rental questions

What does a 17 m telehandler add over a 14 m one?
About 3 m more height and, more usefully, about 3 m more forward reach. That extra reach means a higher permitted load at middle distances: a pallet 8 m out can be at the limit of the 14 m machine and comfortable on the 17 m.
Can a 17 m telehandler replace a crane for roof sheets and steel?
For bundles and pallets on forks to a roof within its range, usually yes. Suspended loads such as steel beams need an approved jib or hook with its own load chart, and they swing more than forked loads. For heavy lifts, or ones that must slew, use a crane or boom truck: a standard telehandler does not rotate.
How much room does a 17 m telehandler need with its stabilizers down?
The machine is about 2.4–2.5 m wide, and the front stabilizers spread out to each side, so the front end needs more width than that on firm, level ground. Send us the width available and a photo, because a narrow gap between building and boundary wall can stop the stabilizers deploying fully.
Does the 17 m telehandler come with an operator?
An operator is available on request. If your own crew runs it, the driver should be trained on telehandlers specifically and able to read the load chart and the load-moment indicator in the cab, because handling a 17 m boom is not the same as driving a forklift.
