About the 100-ton crane

The 100-ton crane is where genuinely heavy city lifts begin. It usually runs on four or five axles, and its boom is only a little longer than an 80-ton's; the bigger difference is the extra counterweight, which raises the permitted load at medium and long radius. That extra counterweight also means higher loads under each outrigger, so ground bearing capacity becomes something to check before the lift.

Much of Jeddah's coastal land is sand or recent fill, some of it with groundwater close to the surface. Put correctly sized spreader mats under every outrigger, and keep the crane off underground tanks, manholes and service lines. If you are unsure of the ground, ask the site engineer or arrange a soil check before lift day.

What a 100-ton crane is hired for

  • Chillers on high-rise roofs

Keeps enough capacity for mid-size chillers on roofs higher than an 80-ton can serve.

  • Tower crane erection and dismantling

Dismantling usually happens beside a finished building, which needs more reach than the original erection did.

  • Heavy precast elements

Places heavy precast beams and panels at long radius where the crane has to stand well back from the erection line.

  • Crusher and batching-plant components

Lifts crusher sections and cement silos when batching plants are set up or moved between sites.

  • Heavy factory machinery

Lowers machines into factory buildings through roof openings or over neighboring structures.

Is the 100-ton crane the right size?

  • Smaller size80-ton crane — When the 80-ton chart covers the lift comfortably, there is no need for the 100-ton crane and its extra counterweight.
  • Larger size120-ton crane — If the crane has to lift over an existing building or set a heavy load beyond about 30 m, compare against the 120-ton crane's chart.

100-ton crane rental questions

Can a 100-ton crane really lift 100 tons?
Only in very specific conditions: boom fully retracted, full counterweight, and a radius of a few meters. In most real lifts the permitted load is far lower, so a piece weighing tens of tons needs a careful check and may need a larger crane if the radius is long.
How much load does a 100-ton crane put on the ground under its outriggers?
In heavy lifts a single outrigger can carry a large share of the crane and load together, meaning tens of tons on a small pad. That is why large spreader mats are used, and the ground is checked near excavations, on fill and on concrete decks such as parking garages.
Can a 100-ton crane start lifting as soon as it arrives?
Nearly. If the counterweight it carries on the road is enough for the lift, it is usually ready within an hour once the outriggers and pads are set. If the lift needs the full counterweight from the support truck, or the jib fitted, add an hour or two to the schedule.
Can a 100-ton crane reach the roof of a 15-story building?
Fifteen stories is about 50 m, and the 100-ton boom with jib goes beyond that, but the permitted load at that height and radius is limited. Light pieces are usually possible; a heavy chiller needs checking against the chart and may need a larger crane.
