About the 150-ton crane

At 150 tons the counterweight is too heavy to travel in full on the crane within road axle limits, so a large share comes on one or two support trucks and is fitted on site in roughly an hour or two. The boom is not much longer than a 120-ton's, but capacity at mid radius is clearly higher, which suits heavy pieces that must be set a moderate distance from the crane.

Industrial sites in Jubail, Yanbu, Rabigh and elsewhere usually require, before entry, third-party inspection certificates for the crane and lifting gear, an operator qualification card, a lift plan approved by the site and daily work permits. Send the site's requirements with your quote request, because one missing paper at the gate can cost a full day.

What a 150-ton crane is hired for

  • Petrochemical shutdowns

During a planned turnaround it lifts heat-exchanger bundles and large valves and stays on site for weeks.

  • Large power transformers

Lifts heavy transformers from the trailer onto their plinths when the crane can stand relatively close.

  • Bridge and interchange beams

Sets concrete and steel beams for medium-size bridges during overnight road closures.

  • Large tower cranes

High tower cranes on tower projects need heavy components lifted to a considerable height for erection and dismantling.

  • New plant installation

Places machinery and pre-assembled units on their foundations while a new plant is built.

Is the 150-ton crane the right size?

  • Smaller size120-ton crane — If the heaviest piece is mid-weight and the lift does not need full counterweight, a 120-ton crane is enough with fewer trucks.
  • Larger size160-ton crane — When the 150-ton chart shows the lift right at its edge at your radius, compare the 160-ton chart; the small step in the number can be exactly the margin you need.

150-ton crane rental questions

Can a 150-ton crane be hired for a whole plant shutdown?
Yes. It can be hired weekly or monthly to cover the shutdown, with scheduled maintenance during the rental and a replacement unit if it breaks down. Send the shutdown schedule and the number of lifts expected so the rental period can be set.
Does fitting the counterweight eat into a 150-ton crane's working day?
Yes. Once the outriggers are set, fitting counterweight from the support truck usually takes one to two hours, longer with a lattice jib, and de-rigging takes a similar time. With only a few lifts, start early, or rig the day before if the site allows.
Is a 150-ton crane enough for a 50-ton transformer?
It can be, if the crane stands close to the plinth with full counterweight, but the permitted load drops quickly as the transformer's position moves away. Send the substation layout and where the trailer will park so the chart can be checked before booking.
Does the 150-ton crane come with an operator and lifting crew?
It comes with an operator. Agree the rest in advance: who provides the rigger and the lift supervisor, and who supplies the slings, shackles and other rigging gear, so the work is not held up on lift day.
