About the 400-ton crane

At 400 tons a mobile crane is less a machine that turns up and lifts than a lifting system assembled on site. The carrier drives on seven or eight axles; the telescopic boom of roughly 60–85 m is extended with a lattice jib to a total height of about 120–140 m, and many machines carry a boom-guying system that raises capacity at long radius. The counterweight arrives on a large number of trucks.

Rigging a 400-ton crane may need a smaller assist crane on site to fit the lattice jib and counterweight, plus a wide, level area where the jib can be laid out before it is raised. Plan that space early, since sites crowded with materials and plant are what most often delay rigging, and mention any limits on truck access to the site.

What a 400-ton crane is hired for

  • Refinery columns and reactors

Raises tall columns to vertical with a tailing crane, where great weight and height come together.

  • Very large transformers

Places the heaviest transformers at a radius smaller cranes cannot manage when the trailer cannot get close.

  • Wind turbine components

Lifts upper tower sections and, depending on hub height and component weight, some nacelles and rotors.

  • Lifting over a running plant

Reaches over pipe racks and live units to place equipment deep inside the plant from outside it.

Is the 400-ton crane the right size?

  • Smaller size300-ton crane — Below about 120 m, and within the 300-ton chart, the smaller crane saves a good number of trucks and part of the rigging time.
  • Larger size500-ton crane — If the heaviest piece is at the limit of the 400-ton chart, or the radius is beyond it, the next step is a 500-ton crane.

400-ton crane rental questions

Mobile or crawler: which is better for a 400-ton lift?
A 400-ton mobile crane rigs and de-rigs in about a day or two and suits a handful of lifts. A crawler of the same class takes several days to assemble but can travel on site with its load, so it pays off on long projects with many heavy lifts.
How far ahead should a 400-ton mobile crane be booked?
The earlier the better: transport permits, escorts, truck coordination and the lift plan all take time before the crane moves. Send the expected lift date even before it is final, then update it as the day approaches.
How high can a 400-ton crane reach?
The telescopic boom alone reaches roughly 60–85 m, and with a lattice jib the total height goes beyond 120 m and can approach 140 m. Capacity at those heights depends heavily on the jib and guying configuration, so it is worked out for each lift.
Can a 400-ton crane go to sites outside Jeddah?
Yes. It can be delivered to any city in the Kingdom, but distance affects travel time and the number of permits the truck convoy needs. On remote sites it makes sense to schedule the lifts in one period to cut travel days.
